At least 44 worshippers have been shot dead at a mosque in Borno State. Announcing this yesterday, authorities said the killings occurred in the town of Konduga, near Maiduguri, during morning prayers on Sunday. The gunmen are suspected to be from the Islamist group Boko Haram, which has killed thousands in northern Nigeria since 2009.
Sources reported that 26 people were being treated for injuries in hospital in Maiduguri as a result of the attack.
Meanwhile, the Boko Haram sect has claimed responsibility for the recent attack on security personnel in parts of northeast Nigeria. In a video cited by AFP, Leader of the sect, Abubakar Shekau also insisted that he was in “good health” despite an ongoing military operation.
The video contained what Shekau claimed was footage of Boko Haram gunmen opening fire on the military in Bama, using heavy weapons mounted on flat-bed trucks. Shekau also referred to fighting in the towns Baga and Gamboru Ngala near the border with Cameroon.
The US Government recently announced a seven million dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of the Boko Haram leader. The sect is widely believed to be made up of different factions, with Shekau leading the most radical Islamist cell.
